WHAT WE DO

Systems Change

We envision a stronger, healthier, and more equitable future for all Maine kids. Child hunger is a significant but solvable problem, and we believe that school meals are one of the most effective tools in ending child hunger once and for all. We advocate for policy changes at community, state, and federal levels that permanently break down the barriers that prevent kids from accessing food.

This year, we passed a law to provide free school meals for all Maine students and helped get more local food in schools. And we’re not done yet! We still have so much work to do and we need your help.

Implementation of Policy and Best Practices

Policy is only effective when it’s put into practice. In conjunction with our policy and advocacy work, we provide resources and support to schools and community organizations to implement child nutrition policies and best practices.

Financial Assistance
Our Grant Programs fund child nutrition programs that provide more meals to more kids. They ensure that nutrition staff across the state have the financial support they need to implement key policy changes like offering Breakfast After the Bell or Afterschool Meals.

Technical Support
We offer technical assistance to child nutrition teams to help them adopt best practices to provide better access to meals. Our child nutrition consultants help nutrition staff identify barriers in existing child nutrition programs and provide resources and on-the-ground support to implement changes.

To make sure that our programs best fit the needs of Maine communities, we learn from and alongside our partners. We work with school nutrition teams and other direct food service providers, governmental leaders, local community organizations, and national food security leaders. Through these partnerships, we can better understand the barriers in our existing systems and adapt our programs accordingly.
